Miniature Commission - DONE!

I did quite a bit more on this than I normally do for gaming miniature painting commission. The figure has an interchangeable head (depending on game play), he's not attached to the base it's more for display. He's been sealed with Testers Dullcote. The standard behind him is scratch made and clear coated as well.

Heh, last night I made the comment that the face looks like a bald version of my husband.

Lets just hope my client is pleased with it. =)

New Miniature Commission

my current commission... as most of you know, I don't ONLY draw & paint pretty pictures.

I've been painting gaming miniatures since the mid 80's. I should really get offa my butt and do something for the Miniatures competition for GenCon this coming year.

The miniature came with two different heads, he liked the idea of interchangeable heads (depending on the game) so I drilled out the area where the head would have been glued, and used GamesWorkshop "Green Stuff" to attach metal pegs at the base of each head.

Halloween & other stuff...

Sorry for my long absence, about a month ago I finally got a new video card to replace the one that burned out earlier in the year... only my pc didn't like the new hardware and decided to give me the finger (in the form of the blue screen of death). I really didn't want to have to reinstall windows since I've lent out some of my program disks and haven't seen them since. So I'm not really sure when or if I'll be able to update my site again. I hate reinstalling windows and am still trying to get stuff reinstalled.

Here's what I did for this past Halloween. I know you've probably seen those really cool 3d renderings on pumpkins; well, I really wanted to try that this year. Every website I had visited said that you only need a medium pottery loop tool to scrape off the outer skin, then you can use just regular pottery/sculpture tools to do the rest. OOOooooo-kay... either I'm not strong enough or my pumpkins were extra tough, the only part of the pumpkin I could actually scrape off with my loop tool the thin orange skin, that's it. I spent a fair amount of time just doing that, so I searched and tried various tools I had in the house. Finally decided to break out the Dremel tool, then it was a breeze from there on out.

CECE 2010 - recap

This was my first time back to CECE since 2007, I had lots of fun and it was my LAST show of the year, most likely it's not, I will probably be at a Zurko Show when one is in the area over the Fall/Winter.

One great thing about CECE is that Paul really knows how to take care of his guests. It was a pleasure to be seated across from the legendary Ken Kelly, we had some good conversations about art and the good ol'USMC. My neighbor to the other side was the SOUP NAZI Larry Thomas. I was so happy that Larry Elmore was at this show, I really missed not hanging out with him and our usual group because I didn't get to do GenCon this year, it was nice to visit and chat with him again. I also went over and bugged on Katie Cook and her husband Ryan for a little bit. And it was really great to finally meet Corbett Vanoni after all of this time. Darla Ecklund, Jessica Hickman and Grant Gould were also there, and it was great seeing them again too. And Bob Stevlic popped in for a visit on both Saturday & Sunday. ^_^ Mark McHaley and I finally got to sit and chat, we met at the 2007 CECE but never got to talk much.

The Charity Dinner Saturday night was so much fun, Bill the Minion and family was at our table along with Grant and Mark. Such a fun bunch and OMG the food was mighty TASTY.

Just a few clips from this past weekend before my batteries died

Now that show season is over, it's time to get LOTS of NEW WORK done, and to restock and make some new merchandise for next years season. *thumbs up*

CECE - Saturday & Sunday

I doubt I'll have another chance to post anything before the show starts... lots of stuff to get done this week plus I'm still dealing with the bodywork SNAFU from that semi-trailer incident a few weeks ago. (Completely unhappy with the work that the bodyshop did, IMO they need to fire their quality control person).

Saturday & Sunday I'll be at the Chicagoland Entertainment Collectors Expo in Carol Stream. Click the link above for more details and directions to the show.
It's my last show of the year so let make it a good one. =)
Hope to see ya'll there.

Silvis Moonlight Festival Craft Show [ recap ]

The weather was wonderful, we had a nice breeze, clear skies, lots and LOTS of sunshine (quick note to self: if I do this show again I will need to invest in a patio umbrella). The craft show was much smaller than I thought it was going to be, it definitely was not my target audience.

I think there is at least one customer at each show that makes that show memorable. There was an elderly gentleman that had been to my booth several times during the day just browsing and listening to me be an ArtNerd to some of the kids asking questions. So about the very end of the show (right about 945p) when it was quiet he came back to pick out his prints and talk to me. He was just so completely happy with his purchases he was grinning like a young kid. It makes me incredibly happy that my work makes someone else that happy.

Below are some clips I shot to show my booth day & night.

And sometimes life kicks you in the teeth...

Lots of life stuff this past week...

Sunday I got side swiped by a semi truck, he only stopped because I honked my horn. And when he got out and started approaching I said "we need to exchange info" that's when he went into hysterics about how I hit him, when really it was his trailer that hit me while I was stopped letting him through. And as fate would have it, I forgot my cellphone at home on my desk. I had asked him several times if he could just call the police to get an accident report done, but since he was hysterical it didn't register. Finally, I had to flag someone down to help me out.

Since the accident was on 'private property' all the officers could do was write up an accident report; but, one of the officers told me that if it had been on the city road the trucker would have been cited for improper lane usage and he would have been at fault. They had marked on the accident report that I was 'parked' when he hit me.

Tuesday Night: just about a week ago today, my grandma passed away, she had Dementia. It was a blessing that she passed in her sleep.

So the rest of my week consisted of helping my parents sort & donate what was left of my grandmother's belongings; and taking care of my vehicle situation. As a result of that accident and truck drivers hysterics, the sleep faeries abandoned me, I had insomnia for about 3 days. I seem to only get it when I'm severely stressed and anxious. I had a terrible bout with it after each Tika and Tasselhoff were put to sleep, hours of laying in bed wide awake staring at the ceiling fan.

Then Friday was the Funeral, after that I came home and slept for about 4 hours.

So here it is a new week, I have a few pieces I'm working on (Zombie Girl & Day of the Dead Themed painting) that I'm hoping to have finished with prints by Friday. Then Saturday I have a show in Silvis IL (2010 Moonlight Parade & Craft Show).

Also on 9/10-9/11 I will be at the Non Sports Expo in Carol Stream IL, which is (or most likely will be) my last show of the year.

Just a few things I've been working on...

I started this bag about a month or so ago... the one I had been using was Pat's, he brought it home from his old job. They always get freebies from their distributors, and he needed it back to carry his stuff with him on the train to work. I had been looking on ebags.com (at this one) for a replacement, but either they were too expensive, too small with the right amount of pockets, or too large with not enough pockets. My only alternative was to make it myself. I probably spent about 45.00 in materials (used a 40% off coupon from Hobby Lobby) each time I needed to buy leather). This was definitely a learning experience, I have learned just how important it is to have the proper foot on your sewing machine in order to sew leather. Too many times I was so close to tossing my sewing machine into the street. @_@ and that was all because I was sewing with the wrong foot on my machine.

The finished project:

I'm currently working on 5 cards for the Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation, this is one, but will also be a full blown painting. Hopefully I get it done before my show at the end of the month... I have no new work since the craft show in June. @_@

Part 3

This installment is all about the hair. @_@

I think... the next video I upload will be just an over view of the finished painting, nothing much left besides highlights and little details. Boring stuff really... like this neurotic hair painting session.

Gift of Art for Bill

I can finally share this with everyone, I've been keeping it a secret for a while now because it was a gift for my friend Bill and I didn't want it to accidentally get shared with him before he received the painting.

I've never been into Jackson Pollock but now I have a much greater appreciation for his work than before. I need to plan a day trip into the city to wander around the Art Inst. In fact there are a bunch of artists I'm seeing in a new light these days. I really enjoyed creating this, I think I needed it. I will be using what I learned from this adventure in future works. It really opened my eyes to new possibilities.

wasn't sure I was going to post this one but really you can't see in the other video how much that black dimensional paint really makes this painting 'pop'.

This month of June...

I apologize for my lack of show updates, this month has been a whirlwind (to put it lightly). The first part of the month my parents were out of town and I was on kitty & plant duty, then I went right into show prep.

So here are all of those updates rolled into one entry!

ChicagolandZ [ June 12 & 13, 2010 ]

This was my first time in the new location, despite the low sales I had a good time. I met Mike Holman, Heather Price & Cherokee Hall, such a fun group. And it's always a pleasure to be seated next to Scott Beaderstadt. MANY kudo's to Jimmy Decker for putting so much effort into this show and making sure that the guests were taken care of.

Geneseo Music & Craft Festival [ June 19-20, 2010 ]

First the drive out to my in-laws was... frightening... there was so much rain and it was coming down so hard that I began thinking it was a bad idea to leave the night before, but we made it there in one piece. (in the video I asked my husband to slow down... that grinding you heard was our traction control kicking in because we were hydroplaning... I was getting really scared.)

I didn't get a chance to take any pictures on Saturday, people were lining up before I was done setting up.

For the first time in 4 years we didn't get a single drop of rain... I was ecstatic. Perfect weather even though the forecast called for an 80% chance of rain on Sunday, which never happened.

It was great seeing and chatting with all of my regulars, and it was a pleasure meeting the new customers as well.

Cyphan [ June 25-27, 2010 ]

This was Cyphan's Year ONE show, I had a pretty good time, I was next to Bob Stevlic and chatted with Jeffery (Kitty Zombie). I really believe next year will be HUGE, Chicago really does need it's on brand of SciFi/Fantasy Convention. And hopefully there will be some official Kitty Zombie artwork in the near future. *wink*

Not many pictures, but I did get to shoot a little movie before my batteries died.

I had to slow the footage of the robots down by half because it was way to jerky if I hadn't.

Sadly I never got over to see Nicki Clyne and Jewel Staite, but I did get to see Svengoolie (he was signing in our room), after his signing he walked around our room, he stopped to gander at my artwork, I was pleased. ^_^

A HUGE Congrats & THANKS goes out to Mike for all of his hard work on making this show happen.

In other news, I will be at Chicagoland Entertainment Collectors Expo Sept 9th-12th. Though because of my husbands job most likely I'll just be there Saturday & Sunday. I will be donating 5 original sketch cards to The Pediatric Oncology Treasure chest Foundation, plus I'll be donating an original Small painting for his Saturday Auction/Raffle.

Lots of stuff to catch up on... need to put the show stuff away, and get to work. <3

Geneseo Music & Craft Festival

Don't forget, rain or shine... let's hope for the latter, I really would like to not see rain just once for this show.

Been working on some new merchandise that showcases my photography of my cats.

Here you can see it in production:

I've decided to donate half of the profits of the sales from these note cards to the Geneseo Humane Society to go towards The Dutch Memorial Fund.

What is the Dutch Memorial Fund? It's a fund that was started after Dutch, a cat that was beaten and nailed to a utility pole, had passed away, this fund is to help pay for medical expenses for injured animals that are brought into the shelter.

So make sure you come to see me and pick up a few lovely things.

Frank Frazetta, Dies at 82

Very sad...

By DAVE ITZKOFF (The New York Times)
Frank Frazetta, an illustrator whose vivid colors and striking brushstrokes conjured up fantastic worlds of musclebound heroes fighting with broad swords and battle axes to defend helpless women from horrible beasts, died on Monday in Fort Myers, Fla. He was 82.

The death, caused by a stroke, was confirmed by Rob Pistella and Steve Ferzoco, his business managers. In a telephone interview, Mr. Pistella said that Mr. Frazetta, who had a history of strokes, had returned from a Mother’s Day dinner with his family on Sunday night and complained of feeling ill. Emergency medical services were called and Mr. Frazetta was rushed to the hospital, where he died. [read more...]

Deviant Art

Recently I sent a message to Deviant Art complaining about the vast amount of daily deviations that are nothing more than trace jobs, when there are many talented artists there that freehand their own work that are getting overlooked. I expressed the need for a second look at these works that are getting picked to weed out the tracers (which in my own opinion are wanna be artists - if they can't draw it, they shouldn't be doing it.)

here's what their response was:

From Daniel Sowers Jr. Copyright & Etiquette Administration Manager

Daily Deviations are chosen by a select group of staff and volunteer members and those selections consist solely of works which they personally found impressive or otherwise interesting enough for them to think that the work deserves to be brought to the attention of the community-at-large.

"Originality" is not a requirement, nor is "quality", or any other standard beyond the one simple fact that the person selecting the work has found it interesting enough to do so.

This is completely the wrong message to send out to an ART community. Originality, Creativity, Technique and QUALITY of work are what the criteria of any 'award' SHOULD be. Not just because 'someone liked it'.

Personal note: If you trace, show some integrity and do yourself a favor; buy a book or two, or take a class, but learn how to freehand your own work. You'll feel more confident about your work knowing that you can actually draw.

Friday, April 23, 2010

It's been a while I know, and I apologize. I've been absorbed in a few things, 1. a new Steampunk Vampire OSWOA, a few new Treebeard ACEO's (one which I just listed on feebay).

I found out on Tuesday (04.19) that the Office Max just up the street had closed, so I ended up spending an hour and a half driving around to find a new printer for my prints. I went into quite a few different places and either they couldn't do 11x17 or they didn't have any 'nice' 11x17 paper for their machines. I ended up at Wally's Printing which is about 15+ mins from the house (with no traffic). Let me tell you, it's nice to be dealing with professionals instead of kids put behind the copy counter.

(Update on Wally's Printing: As of last year (2010 I no longer use them, I dropped of a batch of prints, I always bring my own paper and a list of files on my flash drive that need printing. They botched the job, left off a print, and took my paper. They claim the said file wasn't on the list and I gave them less paper than I did. The OfficeMax across town got new printers so YAY!)

I'm still unsure if I'll be able to make it to GenCon this year... Unless some miracle happens, I really don't think I'll make it.

ChicagolandZ @ Zurko's Antique Mall

The first show of the year is always so refreshing after the dark days of winter. Despite the snow showers and general rainy weather we had, it wasn't a bad day. More than anything I enjoyed getting out of the house and talking to people.

During the course of the day I met two guys Mike & Jeff.

Jeff was the first to stroll by, my black/gray & white ACEO's caught his attention and we started talking... Then he brought Mike over and he really liked my artwork and hopefully I'll be a guest at his show in June.

Also on the board is an ACEO of "Claudia" from "Interview with a Vampire", hopefully I'll have that ready to post on eBay Monday morning. =)

My Gothic Art Prints page is up and ready!

next will be my ACEO Prints page... but I'm kinda stumped on what to do for shipping since I won't be able to set up another set of shipping rules with different prices than what I already have. I may just charge a flat rate and put a button next to the shopping cart button so that buyers can manually add it in.

Fantasy Prints now Available!

After a days of redoing my prints (new logo this year & new website), making graphics, looking up zip codes and shipping prices, my Prints pages are getting done. The first one is the Fantasy Prints.

I just wanted to note that I didn't add ALL of my fantasy images to the prints section, I only added the ones I felt looked best in print form. But if there's a particular faery you must have and you don't see it in the prints section, drop me a line. I can easily whip it up for you. =)

My Neytiri Sketch Video

Another Neytiri ACEO (in progress)

yeah what can I say...

I got my new battery charger yesterday, and recharged my batteries for my camera so I could start filming drawings... I'm so not used to having a camera in my way. @_@ ATM trying to put it all together (there's like 5 segments) I'll upload to facebook first because it doesn't take long at all for it to process unlike YouTube.

Wednesday, February 24, 2010

listed it on feebay and was up there less than 5 minutes... I also sold both twilight cards I did in December. Doing this Na'vi, was really fun, I have one more of Neytiri planned out and a 4x6 of her and jake... I'll probably have the card done by Friday and the 4x6 possibly Monday. *shrugs*
