New things for the new year... 2015

Hopefully after this round of commissions is finished I'll be able to make the changes that have been rolling around in the ol' brain pan.

More Mail in shows, more local shows, revamp/rework my site / DA, work on uploading work to Elfwood, and work on getting other galleries whipped into shape.

I'd like to focus more on new work for my shops - Society6, Redbubble, Zazzle & look more into Design by Humans...

Maybe if they'll have me, I'd like to do more sketch cards sets.

And as always, more drawing, & more painting - in general MAKE MORE ART... I need to stretch my creative wings a lot more.

Online Store Issues...

For the past 3 hours I've been trying to update my store at storenvy and they are having some sort of uploader issues.  I was going to move my store to Square's Marketplace but they're not global which severely limits your audience.

I might have to bite the bullet and go back to Etsy, I really don't want to.
Earlier in the year Etsy was randomly selecting stores for their beta layout codes and inadvertently killed many stores, mine was one of them.  It seems like my store got buried, my sales and views dropped in the toilet.  I hate the thought of paying a monthly fee for listings that never sell or get any views.

It's just all so frustrating.

WindyCon is in the rear view...

Windycon is behind me now. When all is said & done, I broke even and a made smidge more. Next year I will ONLY be dropping artwork off to be in the Art Show so I will not be attending.

I met some wonderful people, and saw some GenCon artshow regulars. Jon Snow found a new home, that makes me very happy.

A HUGE Thank you to everyone that stopped by my table! You were the ones that made it worth while!

Next up... CapriCon? I will be applying for the CapriCon Artshow for February. I will not be there, I will only be doing a artwork drop off & pick up. Hopefully by then I'll have some brand new work to show!

Gandalf Work in Progress

Well, it's that time of year when my muse leaves me and goes on vacation, so I present to you a drawing of Gandalf. When all else fails, draw something you're familiar with. For me that's Gandalf or anything Middle Earth related. =)

Just a reminder, I will be at the Home for the Holidays Craft show in Geneseo Illinois. This will be my second to the last show of the year - my final show is NEXT weekend in Lombard at WindyCon.

I've also disabled my online store for now because I have a lot of originals with me, and I'd hate to double sell one. It'll be back online on Sunday.

Sketching in the Car...

I had an idea brewing before we left to meet up with some friends for lunch at the Mitsuwa Market in Arlington Heights, so I sketched what I could in the car before I could get motion sick. I had the best Udon from Kayaba, then had my first Chai Bubble Tea. OMG so good.

Since original art sales have been painfully slow, I'm going to start focusing on 1. Sketch Cards again and 2. doing work to put on products in my Society6 Store.

The Muse is Restless.

Been trying to get some drawing done to participate in Inktober, but... The kittens we adopted had a flair up of Upper Respiratory Infection and ended up making ALL OF THE OTHER CATS SICK TOO.  So for the past week and a half I've been disinfecting everything, every day, washing kitty blankets, food & water dishes.  It's tiring.    Not to mention that the kittens are about 5 months old, so they are between biting all the time and cuddling.  They still are not to the point of going to bed at night, instead they wrestle and bite on each other till they are booted off of the bed.

The muse is still restless, but the artist is exhausted.

In search of something more...

Finished my elf. 5x7 Marker/Colored Pencil/Acrylic. My camera shows more yellow (if there's a lot of blue) I still need to reinstall my scanner drivers so I can get a proper image of it.

Even though I'm happy with how this turned out, it still doesn't satisfy my muse. Back to the sketchbook for more drawing.

Arting

Think I'm going to transfer it to bristol so I can color it. My original intention was to draw up something for a new site profile picture. We'll see how it turns out, but I feel like I need to keep drawing, because this still doesn't satisfy the muse.

Last nights sketching

I feel like I need to re-evaluate my direction - I just don't know; I'm feeling listless. (could be the crappy weather too). Maybe I need to just do a ton of drawing and see where that takes me?  Or just completely reinvent myself artistically?  I feel like I'm in need of a change.

GenCon 2014

I had really high hopes that GenCon would have been better this year compared to last because of the icky guy. My spot should have been an awesome spot, but it seemed like when people turned the corner they never even saw my booth. It was utterly disappointing, I can’t justify the expense if I can’t even make back my booth fees. So, I won’t be returning next year.

If I do ever make it back, I need to start thinking about getting a small dealers booth on the floor & get out of the Art Show.

The highlight was spending time with my friends. Talking with my artist friends kinda got the creative juices in my brain pan churning, I have a lot of drawing to do a head of me. Hopefully it’ll result in lots of new work.

Next year the GenCon art show is going to have a radical change, it will now be a juried show. There are a few local shows I’m going to do instead, IF Flashback Weekend isn’t on the same day as Wizard World Chicago I’ll try and do both of them, if not then it’ll only be Flashback. (If I can get in).

So yeah, Goodbye GenCon see you in a few years (maybe).

Today & the rest of this week: unpack, reorganize boxes & art, do laundry & list left over art on my *NEW* store: http://conniefaye.storenvy.com

Coming up in November: Possibly CECE Annex, Home for the Holiday's Craft Show & WindyCon Chicago.

Geneseo Music & Craft Festival 2014

At first I was pretty excited because in the past this show has been one of my better shows. But not this year, it was a very disappointing show, the city really shot themselves in the foot by cancelling it two years ago, then last year only having it as a one day show.  Saturday, was good, a fair amount of attendees, but Sunday was painfully desolate. Many of the other crafters bugged out Saturday evening or early Sunday because there was a threat (30%) of storms.  The storms ended up passing us by and weather-wise it was a nice day.  Because of the city failing to properly advertise the show, the attendees from the biker event the next city over didn't even know that there was a craft show on Sunday.

I will definitely be back next year, if I didn't have family there it would be a different story.  Next show is GenCon, and lots to do before August.  If you live in Geneseo IL and missed me this past weekend I will be at the 'Home For The Holidays' craft show in November.

Practice makes markers perfect.

[ back dated ]
It's no secret that I'm super uncomfortable working in makers. It's one of the things I hated most about doing sketch cards. So before I even start working on my current contracts, I'm going to try and come up with a style I'm comfortable working with copics.

Here's what the progress looked like:

1. is how I would typically do a sketch card, lay down basic colors with an attempt at shading, then line everything.

But I want to get away from lining my work, I'm much more comfortable with a brush than a maker, and I wanted the same feel as I get with my paintings.

2. is getting closer, I just need to adjust the colors.

3. is right where I want to be, it's a good blend of colors, and shading mixed with colored pencils and acrylics.

4. I was saving this one till I knew I had the technique right.

I also ended up making two videos in the process:

There is a bit of narration (i'm still not comfortable talking on camera so I'm a bit frazzled.)
