Show Season Wrap / Research & Development Time

For me show season wrapped up last weekend with the Chicago Pop Culture Convention.  I've never done a show that has over lapped with the Holiday shopping season before, so I wasn't really sure what to expect.  Even though sales were incredibly slow, several small framed paintings found homes. Which, you know, this is something I've been trying to do more of.  Hopefully this will be my focus this coming year:  Art 8x10 and smaller, framed, ready to hang 100.00 and under.

This year (2016) overall sales were down, because attendance was down. Several friends of mine speculated it was because of the political atmosphere of the election.   Personally I have yet to see (from my end being freelance) that the economy is getting better. I guess only time will tell.

Next up:
Now that show season is over it's time to get working on advancing my painting skills.  For a while, I've been itching to experiment without worrying about messing up expensive watercolor paper. I just feel like I'm severely lacking the experimentation element of art, being so consumed with finishing work to sell.

Over the weekend I got a peek at Brian Stelfreeze's Artbook. I absolutely love the way he uses color. And I've been in love with Drew's work since I was old enough to realize who he was. So I bought a few things: books from Amazon (Amazon Prime 18% off w/free 2 day shipping) and a new sketchbook from Michael's (YAY 50% off coupon).

I may have time to just play and start recording some of this for video episodes on my YouTube channel and maybe make some of it only available on my Patreon site.  Which is another thing I really need to work on.

This week, I'm cutting and decorating mats for the smaller works from my convention art bin. I'm also going to try and squeeze in some personal sketch/art cards. I'll be listing everything in my Etsy Shop as I go.

Till next time!

Dr. Robert Miller

Today I found out that my High School Art Instructor had passed away on November 2.   For years I've been trying to locate him, my old high school didn't have any forwarding info, and any internet searches always came up empty.  I'm feeling a little heartbroken that I will never get to see him again.

Dr. Robert Miller more so than any other person had such an immense impact on my early art career.  He really did care about helping his students succeed, and if you put in the effort he would help you to become a better artist.   His classes were not for the weary, or for the students thinking they were going to get an easy grade.

I always marveled at his drawing skills. That first demonstration he gave on how to draw a skeleton, I wanted to draw like that.  His pencil renderings were a thing of beauty. Every mark he made on the paper had it's purpose.  'No Chicken scratches were allowed'. Something he'd say about those short little wispy lines he'd see us drawing.

Doc Bob got me into Art Competition, I still have my ribbons, they are packed away at my parents house.  I really enjoyed it and it was something I really missed once I was out of High School. I will always remember him saying (when we'd get the exacto knife from him to cut mats) 'count your fingers' and you'd count them out loud, he'd hand you the exacto and say 'I want you to have that many when you're done.'

Doc Bob also got me my first scholarship, a week of 'Art Camp' at the University of Illinois.  He gave me a bunch of supplies I would need and told me, as long as I used them, they were mine to keep.  I still have the watercolor palettes, some of the paints and I think I still have a brush or two.

Senior year I spent so much time in the Art Department it felt like home. Even now when I looked through the pictures I had taken so long ago, nearly all of them were taken in the art department.

I'm sad that I will never get the chance to tell him that his guidance and instruction in those early years helped mold me into the artist I am today.

For what it's worth -
Doc Bob, Thank you so much for being an excellent teacher and mentor. I am deeply grateful and you will forever be remembered.

Zurko's Haunted Halloween All Night Flea Market and Meeting the Mighty Wez

The Wheaton All Night Flea Markets have become some of my favorite shows. This past weekend was no exception even with the sluggish sales (thanks cubs game).  I had signed on to do this show earlier in the year (probably around June), and it wasn't till sometime in September did I realize who the media guest was going to be.   Vernon Wells!  I was excited and nervous at the same time.

Day of the show I get there super early, and found out that my booth was right next to his, now I was really nervous, I think it was just the anticipation of meeting him and giving him a print of the drawing I made of his character from Mad Max 2 / The Road Warrior.

Once he got there it was all good, probably one of the best evenings I've had in a loong time.

2016 Halloween Art and The Unexpected Consequences of 31 Day Challenges...

First up, is a painting from last years #drawlloween drawing challenge:

Drawlloween Day 25

Original is for sale over at my Etsy Shoppe Along with 11x17 (A3) Prints and 8.5x11 (A4) Prints.

As well as a whole bunch of merchandise over at Society6.

Then there was a last minute inspiration.
Totoro If you haven't seen 'My Neighbor Totoro', you are seriously missing out.

This original is for sale too, at my Etsy Shoppe.
Along with 11x17(A3) Prints and 8.5x11 (A4) Prints.

I made a few things over at Society 6, mainly I just wanted to have phone cases and tote bags available.

Now starts the mad dash, I have a show next weekend and I would really like to have this done by then.

I love this movie, and it's sad that Gene Wilder has passed, which is what originally prompted this drawing.

Ok, so The Unexpected Consequences of 31 Day Challenges

Last year when I embarked on this journey, I had no idea how much I'd fall in love with these challenges. It's been a year, and I've noticed a LOT of creative growth, not only in my subject matter but my drawing skills have greatly improved along with my creative thinking.  It helps get you out of your own head and onto subject matter you might not have even considered drawing.

I can't recommend at least trying 1 31/30 day challenges enough. It's hard and it'll seem like a chore, but if you keep with it, you'll too see improvements in your skills.  It only takes 30 days to create a habit for better or worse.  Hopefully for the better, it'll get you into some good artistic habits.  And in order to get better at any skill you must constantly practice and challenge yourself, if you're really serious about improving.

There are quite a few Drawlloween calenders out there, my group is doing a mash up between the two.  Then there's Jake Parker's Inktober challenge, doesn't matter which calendar you do, just go for and stick with it.

Store has MOVED!

It's official, my store has moved back to ETSY!  So to celebrate I have a little coupon to help kick things off.

https://www.etsy.com/shop/ConnieFaye

I really should have been trying to get this illustration completed instead of moving my art from one store to another.  I just didn't want to give those rotten bastards at storenvy any more of my or my patron's money.

My Online Store may be moving back to Etsy...

So, If there's anything you want out of my store, you should go and get it now. I hate to move my store again, but, I can't deal with a company being flat out dishonest about what they've done.

For the past year I've been paying for an extra for my store to get greater control over my coupon codes. I log into my store yesterday to make a coupon code so that new followers to my fan page can get a little off their first purchase. I noticed that the extra was reverted back to the 'free' state. I go to my 'extras' page and see that it has been turned off. I turned it back on and they want more for it, I contact support and I was told that I turned it off (on the 13th), and that I have to pay the higher price. But, I didn't turn it off. Same thing happened last month, when it was turned on they gave me the regular price I had been paying.

Meanwhile I need to figure out what else there is out there. I may just bite the bullet and go back to Etsy. I know it'll cost way more than what I'm currently paying, but they have a better marketplace and don't require me to use their payment source in order to participate in it

Dear Wells Fargo,

Why are you perpetuating the idea that 'The Arts" are a waste of time when you HIRED photographers, graphic designers, and actors to make your brochure?  What in the hell were you thinking? It's not your place to tell anyone that their path is a waste of time. Shame on you.

Count - I - Con Day 2

I've been doing shows since about 2004, and this one... yeah, we're just going to chalk this one up to 'a learning experience'. Total loss..  Lots of hype, but that's all it was.

So artists if you're approached to do this show, just beware, it's not a good show, especially if they want you to pay for your booth.

On to new and better things - Sketchbooks will start going out this week as I get sketches done. Plus I have a few paintings I'd like to get done before I dig in on Halloween work for The Haunted All Night Flea Market : Freddie, Jason & Regan MacNeil (exorcist), also have some cute Halloween type art to do.

Lots to do!

Next show:
Chi-Pop-Con Oct 7th & 8th - in Carol Stream
and
Wheaton Haunted Flea Market - Oct 22nd.

Here's a little story video I took for my instagram of my friends Kurt Dinse and Rob Hogan.

Count - I - Con Day 1...

It's been a really long time since I've done a show that was this bad.  From what I've been told last year it was a really good show, that's why I decided to do it.  Even if Sunday turns out to be a good day, it's highly unlikely I'll be returning next year.  It's a long drive, (1.5hrs one way) and a lot of work to not make any money.  I talked to friends of mine also working this show and they've said pretty much the same thing.  No one's really buying.

I'm not sure what the issue is, maybe they didn't advertise enough or maybe sales are so bad because it's following on the heels of Wizard World?

All I know is I need Sunday to be an awesome sales day.

A photo posted by Connie (@connie_faye) on

I really need a new phone, one that takes better pictures.  I'm so tired of the pictures I take with my phone being out of focus.

While I was having no sales, I worked on one of the Pre-Order Sketchbook sketches.

"Musings" 2016 Sketchbooks

My muse decided to throw me a curve ball today. She thinks I should put together a sketchbook for my show NEXT weekend (and for the comicbook show the weekend after that). And she’s hinting at wanting me to do a sketchbook filled with drawings of Piglet doing things. I think that will be fun, but this sketchbook thing on short notice. Seems like an awful lot of work. But you know, I've been wanting to try and come up with an illustration project, and I think this might be it.

I’m hoping to have the pages finished this weekend, so I can get to the printer on Monday (Tuesday at the latest). I’ll be taking preorders on Sunday.

Website Moved...

With all of the changes to services within this past year (Oct 2015 - Present) I was left with no other options but to leave blogger for hosting my website. Earlier in the year Google was merging Picasa with their Google Photos and discontinuing Picasa all together. We were told that if we were using links to the photos in picasa, nothing would change. But once the migration was done, how those pictures reacted once you clicked on them was not the same. It doesn't matter how you had the images displayed once clicked you were redirected to a google site. So basically my gallery was broken again.

I would have rather spent the last 3 days working on new paintings for my show in two weeks instead of reworking my entire website in a new place. During that time I disconnected my domain from blogger to point to my new site at weebly, which is why it's been unavailable. (still waiting for it to propagate through.)

Why weebly? As compensation for comcast/xfinity axing our personal webpages, they gave us (those who claimed it within the allotted time frame) 2 years of a free pro account. I still have a year left, and thought I'd take advantage of it before it runs out. So about June next year I'll be moving my site again to Wix and also transferring my domain to them as well. I really like their site controls much better than Weebly, and the yearly wix subscription includes domain fees.

There are still a few things left to finish on my new site, mainly the gallery area. I'll be working on that today. I'm also keeping my blogger blog, because there's no way to transfer my entries. I've been with blogger since 2004\5 and I really don't want to abandon those archives. So for now I'll continue using blogger for my blog only.

Hopefully my domain will be active with the new site later on today.

Geneseo Music & Craft Festival 2016 [ recap ]

I just wanted to take a minute to Thank everyone that stopped by that weekend.

I really appreciate talking to everyone, and sharing my art with you guys. I've enjoyed doing this show for the past 7 years, but this past year was my last year.

Now, it's not you guys, it's the city. They really destroyed this show when they decided they didn't want to do it anymore. Even though the next year they brought it it back for only one day, the damage was already done. Also, I have a feeling they aren't advertising like they used to; because number of people attending has been really low. This show just hasn't come back to the way it was the year before they cancelled it.

Honestly it's a lot of work for such low sales. I said last year I'd give it another year, and this year just didn't pan out like I had hoped.

Week in Review [ Mar.28 - Apr.3]

Just in case you've missed it on [ instagram ]
This is kind of a long update, I wish instagram had image size options when you embed your images to your blog.
... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...
I know I said I was going to start painting on that Cthulhu illustration on Monday, I instead decided to work on some Artist Sketch Cards 1. sell on feebay (I need to try and generate some cash since sales are still ridiculously slow.) and 2. they're subject matter that I'm working on building a bunch of samples to try and get onto sets of. Walking Dead & Game of Thrones. One of them is with a different company than the one I've been working with currently. I also need to hone those marker skills.

Now for what I'm currently working on:

A photo posted by Connie (@connie_faye) on

I also went and had some sketch cards made up at the local printer on my bristol (just because I know the quality of the paper, I hate dealing with unknown paper types). They're a hair smaller than they should be, I like them well enough. When I run out I'll probably just find a place online to get them printed from. Need to do some research for that.

A photo posted by Connie (@connie_faye) on

The gouache I ordered finally came in, I have several illustrations that have been on hold because of that, hopefully this week I can start on them.

If anyone's interested I am open for sketch card commissions. you can either email me, or place your order [ HERE ].

And don't forget to follow me on instagram, I'm always posting art updates there.

SketchFest is live this weekend so I've been working on a few prompts. At the moment I have no plans to turn these concept drawings into full paintings.

I have one more prompt to work on, I'm not sure I'll get it done in time (only a few hours left to SketchFest72). Today I'd like to try and hammer out one or two sketch cards or 4x6's to list on feebay tomorrow AM. Unsure yet.

If you really want to keep up to date on what I'm working on make sure you follow me on Instagram (or Twitter, all of my IG posts flow to twitter).

Google Abandoning Blogger users in favor of Social Media Image Sharing.

http://googlephotos.blogspot.com/2016/02/moving-on-from-picasa.html#links

As of March 15, 2016, google will no longer be supporting the Picasa desktop application. After much thought and consideration, we’ve decided to retire Picasa over the coming months in order to focus entirely on a single photo service in Google Photos. We believe we can create a much better experience by focusing on one service that provides more functionality and works across mobile and desktop, rather than divide our efforts across two different products.

Basically what that means is they are abandoning bloggers and desktop users in favor of mobile applications and sharing across social media platforms. Google photos is bare bones meant for the sole purpose of sharing via google plus and facebook. You will no longer be able to create thumbnails of your images or directly link to your images as we bloggers need to.

I'm just so sick of this. I pay extra to have extra storage space because comcast totally canceled their photo storage/hosting option, and I refuse to use photobucket. The sheer amount of image theft there makes me sick.

Honestly I have no idea what I'm going to do for image hosting now. Next thing, I bet, will be getting rid of blogger all together. =( Then I'll have no other choice to move to word press (which I don't want to do because unless you subscribe (aka pay) you have absolutely no control over your content.)

Tribute to AA Milne and EH Shepard - Winnie the Pooh

So, I run a private group on facebook dedicated to daily sketching/drawing. Every month I put out a calendar of prompts and you draw which ever prompt inspires you the most. The point is to just draw every day, skill level doesn't matter.

Well... January 18th was A.A. Milne's Birthday also known as Winnie the Pooh Day, that day the prompt was to Draw a winter activity to include Pooh & gang.

I grew up watching winnie the pooh, back in the early 70's I had a pooh-bear, so early Winnie the Pooh holds a special place in my heart. As an adult I admire EH Shepard's original illustrations of Pooh & gang, which is more or less what I based this drawing on.

Needless to say, I was very inspired. And yet again, I feel as though this is a direction I need to explore more of.

Graphic Design stuffs.

So there's this other thing that I do, Graphic Design. I have a few clients, mostly convention people and my mother in law (for the Geneseo Model Railroaders Train Club.)

The original picture was taken by one of the Railroad club members and my mother in law needed it for their 2016 button design. I had to modify the picture so that it would fit (full bleed) into the circular design, I also wanted to just make it a better photo without the foliage, benches and christmas decorations. Took about 2 hours (including laying out the button design w/ text).
